Cisco 827

OK as in a previous post I need to replace my current router (Linksys
WAG54G).

I need to be able to share a connection between two machines on teo
floors, preferably not via any sort of machine hosted connection sharing.

I think for an all-in-one wireless modem/router I'm more or less settled
on a Zyxel 660HW.

I got to looking around through one of our suppliers at work I've seen I
can get a Cisco 827 for £62 through their approxed refurbished program,
i.e it will be good as new with full warranty.

My question is if I would really be any better off doing this?

Obviously I'd need to also have an access point near to the router, so
overall it would end up costing me more than the Zyxel, and I'm not sure
what real-world benefit there would be (I guess "it's a Cisco?").

My WAG54G is suffering from the known problem of the internet connection
stopping and the router needing to be reset/power cycled, as best as I
can tell I can still ping the router and internal machines even when the
Internet isn't working, so I'm wondering if I could use the WAG54G as an
Access point connected to the Cisco and not have to buy a seperate AP?

Sorry, could you elaborate ? The "known problem" perhaps among WAG54G is
perhaps an unknown problem for non users (but soon to be Something to
do with peer-to-peer and lots of connections, or something else (I have a
friend with one - his choice I hasten to add - but I know nothing about a

if you connect the Linksys to the Cisco using only the ALN connection, you
should be able to use the Linksys as an AP. I do the same with my Netgear
WGT624.
Lan to Lan. Turn off any dhcp on the Linksys as well ;-)

I suspect with the new ones it's not so much of an issue, but if you
look on almost any Linksys related forum there are a host of issues with
the WAG54G related to the thing just locking up, especially when the
wireless is heavily utilised. I don't use P2P and I'm not what I'd call
a heavy downloader - the things's just flaky :-)

Dont bother the linksys will still lock up if used as a AP. Mine does. I
think th eproblem is in th ewireless side not the gateway side.

Have just replied to an earlier post and was interested in the problems
you are having with the Linksys?. I did wonder if the heat generated
internally was a problem?. Mine has never let me down but I turn it off
each night but it does seem to run hot and I wonder what it would be
like left on all the time?.

I considered it, also certain of the posters on the forums reported a
degree (no pun intended) of sucess either sticking the thing on its
side, or attaching a small fan.

I tend not to keep track of when the thing's locked up, but I'm sure
it's happened more since it's got warmer, and I do keep mine on all the
time.

I might persue an RMA but I need something in the meantime, so my
thinking is sort out something, then eBay the replacement.

Nice. Thanks for the heads-up. I think I'll be going for the Zyxel
660HW unless anyone tells me that's a piece of shit too.
