Hi all

Just got the above on ebay.

When the unit is powered up connected via crossover to lan on single
PC the device does not seem to boot correctly. All i get is the 3
indicator lights all flashing orange, constantly.

I have tried a default reset and cant ping the default ip. The IPSU
app wont communicate with it either. Is there an alternate way of
flashing firmware?

Thanks for your time

Oh-oh. It's not booting properly.

Have you tried the serial port? I don't recall for sure but methinks
you can use xmodem to upload a firmware image. Even so, you can see
the boot sequence on the serial port and perhaps guess what's
happening.

Normally, the firmware updates are done via tftp or using the web
interface. However, without a useable IP address, that's not going to
work.

Thanks Jeff, but the Workgroup Bridge does not have a serial port. I
guess it's a throw away

Hi Jeff, thanks for the reply but the workgroup bridges dont have a
serial port. Anyone want a nice cream doorstop.

I have a few Cisco AIR-WGB342R and I vaguely recall that they did have
a serial port. I guess my memory is failing:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/...at/340wgbr.htm
ok, no serial port. Bummer.

Here's the official reset ordeal process, (which I know you said
you've tried):

http://www.set.usm.edu/sblesse/downl...RecAiroNet.pdf
Note that there's no default IP address.

So, lets's try another trick. Run:
arp -s 192.168.1.11 xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx
where xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx is the MAC address of the bridge. Then try
ping, http, ftp, and/or telnet to 192.168.1.11.

No good, just get a destination host unreachable. I get a link light
on the WGB when the crossover cable is inserted and seems to try to
pass data albiet at base 10 rather than 100. I think the bootup
sequence must be corrupt. EVen the hard reset button does not seem to
do squat.

Thanks anyway

OK i have managed to find the ip of the unit via a mac address finder.
It lists the mac address correctly as the default values ip as
192.168.200.1, however i cant get a response from the WGB via ping or
telnet. I just get timeout error.

Any ideas how to upload new firmware with just an ip address

Yes. Use TFTP. The imbedded part of the firmware (that which cannot
be mangled by users) includes a TFTP server. Find a suitable TFTP
Windoze client[1], the firmware images, and upload. There are lots of
TFTP client programs available for download[2]. Don't worry about
ping, telnet, http, for now. If the boot code have been
overscribbled, I don't know how to recover. Try "Cisco" and "Aironet"
for default passwords.

Password recovery for Cisco 340 WGB
http://www-tss.cisco.com/eservice/co...#ret_workgroup

[1] Cisco no longer supplies Windoze TFTP server software because of
a security bug, and because it mangled images over 16MBytes.

[2] Linksys tftp client:
ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/tfpt.exe
However, it has a security problem:

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...Other/tftp.exe
3rd party free TFTP client:
http://www.tftp-server.com/tftp-client.html

Try setting up a sniffer, like Ethereal, and then turn on the WGB. Most
Cisco devices will emit Ethernet loopback frames and gratuitous ARP replies
upon booting. Either will reveal the correct MAC address, and the ARP reply
will reveal the correct IP address.

It's possible that the WGB refuses to respond to ICMP Echo (PING) requests,
and that it's Telnet server isn't running. It's more likely that the device
doesn't have the IP address that you think, or that it's malfunctioning. If
you have a Unix/Linux host or another Cisco device, you could try issuing a
TRACEROUTE command to the WGB; it uses UDP packets, not ICMP (Microsoft
TRACERT won't work--it uses ICMP Echo).

Not if it's the wrong one! Seriously, if you have the right IP address and
it won't respond to ARP Requests giving the right MAC address, there's a
serious problem. You won't be able to use TCP/IP under these circumstances.

Thanks for the tips, I ran etheral and got nothing from the device,
only from the ethernet card. Guess it's dead

Thanks for help anyway
