Hi all,

Considering making the leap to ADSL from dialup. Local exchange is ADSL
enabled, and we have an analogue line, so I don't think there should be a
problem in that department.

I've been looking for broadband providers in the UK but have turned up only
a few:

- PlusNet
- Demon
- BT/Yahoo
- Freeserve

I've had a look at the relative merits of each and am a little undecided at
present. Perhaps someone here has some comments on, or experience of, any of
the above, or perhaps other providers that I might care to take a look at?

Regards,

http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ is a good place to start for all your
questions.

Pipex, Nildram, Andrews & Arnold

Many providers also offer a reduction for subscribers who recommend new
users to them, so when you decide who you want, it might be worthwhile
asking if anyone would like to recommend them so they get a free month or
whatever out of it :-)

(i`m with Pipex, as you can probably tell from the header)

Please be aware that just because your exchange has been enabled does not
mean you can get adsl. There are other factors in this and BT will test
your line for compatibility. You line could be too far from the exchange -
you may live only a mile from the exchange but the route the line takes from
your house could go the scenic route and end up being over 6km. Or your
line could be too noisy. If you are within the distance allowed but have a
noisy line, this can be got around by having a new line installed. Or there
may be dacs unit on your line. If you have dacs, then you need to get it
removed. BT will do this for you.
Not trying to be a party pooper, just that you need to be aware that it may
not be just a case of switching on your line and plugging in the modem.
I do hope that you do pass the line test, good luck.

I have a situation where the a single line was converted to two lines -
presumably with a dacs unit.
It was then converted back to a single line and adsl added.
Quality started as just fine but now the adsl connection keeps falling over.
Is it possible that the dacs unit was left on the line?
Who do I ask to check this?

Chris

Im with BTYahoo and it's fine, apart from a small problem that arose
when trying to access my Yahoo email account. The software kept
automatically re-directing me to BTYahoo and apparently others have
been having this problem too. Anyway there is a work around until they
make a permanent fix. Apart from that, the service is just great.

John.
