Choosing Dynamic or Static IP Address ?

Many ADSL Providers now offer both Dynamic IP Address and Static IP Address
connection - the latter being offered at a slightly higher price.

My question is, for the average non-networked home user (who will never need
such things as an SMTP feed) is there any point in going for the Static IP
Address option ?

Excuse my ignorance here, but are there any Contention Ratio considerations
when choosing between Dynamic or Static IP address options ?

TIA

Geoff

No, contention ratio is not affected by IP address. You're on the same
line, same "pipe", etc., just assigned the same IP address (or block
of addresses) when you log in instead of a random one.

Little Known Fact - to run Dynamic IP the ISP has to pay BT *more* to
run an IP pool. So ISPs which charge you more for Static IP have
*deliberatly* first paid more out to put you on Dynamic. Strikes me as
a tad sneaky.

We don't pay that - we can't do Dynamic IP. We offer static IP as
stanard - and we dont' charge extra for it! :-)

you can use the inbuilt windows XP client for control or get the free 2Tight
VNC" from a search engine.

Tight VNC allows remote control via a web browser so you could do it
anywhere.

Presumably not in a cable provider's case?

Just so. I was speaking only of BT-based ADSL/SDSL services.

Yes, but a fixed ip will be allocated just to you. If you go offline for
any reason, that ip address is still being allocated to you, Whereas
dynamic is freed for someone else. Quite a few people disconnect adsl when
not using, so theoretically you can have 10 ip addresses for 11 people.

Or even better, UltraVNC It's got filetransfer and chat built in, and
lots of other nice tricks, like automatic encoding selection based on
bandwidth....

Some ISP's offer Static at no extra cost. Plus.net being an example.

Some routers also have dymanic dns updating software in them, allowing
them to update your hostname lookup even if you are on a dynamic IP. I
know the Draytek 2600 can do this...

Even if your router doesn't offer this facility you can use a program like
http://www.directupdate.net/ on your machine which does the same thing.
