Cheapest way to network two laptops

I need to network two laptops for the following reason. I need to
install some CD-based software (MS Streets and Trips) that requires 1
GB of disk sapce. One laptop has a CD drive but limited disjspace;
the other one has lots of disk space but no CD!

Short of buying an external CD, is there a cheaper solution to my
problem? Perhaps networking the two laptops. Could someone be
specific in terms of the suggested solution?

Many thanks

Its quite normal for laptops to have built in network cards, if this is true
for the 2 PC's you have, then all you would require is a network "crossover"
cable. If you have firewire, they can be easily networked through that with
only a cable, or with USB you can purchase a cheap box that would allow you
connect the 2 PCs.

Once the two laptops are connected by firewire, what software do I
need to allow them to transfer files between each other? Thanks in
advance.

I sort of assumed you were running XP, in which case it should just work.
You may have to install additional networking components such as File and
Printer Sharing, and set up some shared directories on each PC so that they
can see each other. Your firewire ports though should already be showing up
in the network connections page of the control panel.
