We're on Pipex and are very happy with the service, however for the past few
months I've monitored our usage, which amounts to around 1GB -2GB a month,
thus I've been looking at http://www.metronet.co.uk/ who offer a PAYG
service, thus on this usage it would cost between 14-17quid (incl VAT) -
however no idea if the service would be anywhere near as good as pipex has
been (i.e. no outages that I've noticed, yet!)

metronets PAYGO500 DSL may be a good option if you are likely to be an
occasional user.
£11.75 pm incl VAT for 200mb up/down,
then about 0.3 pence per MB after that (inc VAT).
my last bill was for £15.

I was thinking of migrating to metronet from Pipex, would you care to
comment on the reliability of the service, i.e.
number of outages,
noticeable speed drops at certain times of the day,
reliability of billing,
etc.

Many thanks in advance

Jon

Do Metronet provide an email address, and web space, with this
account, as I cannot find any mention on the web site, which
presumably means no. (

you have to pay an activation fee, but you have to remember that all ISPs
have to pay this to BT, so you will pay this somehow whoever you sign-up
with.(eg: slightly increased monthly charge.)
there is no webspace or email, however i can access my old dialup email
servers, so am continuing to use them. They do provide email accounts for
about £7 per year if you want it.
You can use other email/webspace providers however.
Service so far (2 months) has been very good. No connection problems/speed
problems that i have noticed. Their phone and email support (in london i
dialled a local number for support) has been prompt and courteous. It took
about 5 days from signup to activation.
I did have a problem where my ADSL was not working on the activation date,
but this seemed to be down to a problem in the BT exchange, which support
helped sort out and it was working when i woke up the next day.
Billing is based on 1st day of the month to last day, so whenever you sign
up, your first bill will be a partial month. At present you cant pay by DD,
but you can pay via the website using CC. I am going to pay via my internet
banks bill payment facility. There apparently are trying to implement DD,
but it is complicated by the varying bill amounts.
You can check you usage via a good statistics page when you log on to your
account.
I have had no problem with billing until today.
I have been away this weekend, and have found that on Saturday 140MB was
downloaded on my connection. I was 250 miles away and no-one had access to
my PC! I have queried this today and am waiting on a response from
metronet.
You can check your previous bills online, amend your contact details, pay
your bills,.
So far I am very happy with the service. I am hoping that this billing
anomaly will be sorted out smoothly.
Don't forget to check out the forums at www.adslguide.org for comments on
any ISP.

I have had a reply from Metronet - again very quick response - I HATE
waiting for email support. It reads :

"We appoligise for the spike, and it will be removed (from the
download/upload
summary, the bit the billing is involved in). It is currently being
investigated why this is occuring as it has affected a small number of
our
users; all at the same time.

We will keep you informed."

So I will have to keep an eye. Hopefully it will be just a "spike" in
an otherwise great service so far.

Any more questions, just ask.
Rob.

I have been with metronet for 6 weeks now. Speed and reliability have been
faultless. Only had one bill and that was correct. The prices they quote do
not include vat.
