What about a 3G phone with data plan? Some of them work on PAYG with flat
rate... if he's out in the sticks best to test the signal first!

Interesting you should mention that. 2Mb is very acceptable if reliable.

A friend of mine has a 2Mb 'NTL' account. Because I have their cable here too, I
'nicked' his cable modem briefly whilst he was on holiday to see how good the
service was. On the basis of the actually quite good results I got from that I
signed up to it myself for a trial period. They actually offered me the 4Mbps
service for only a pound more than 2Mbps so I went with that. What's curious is
that at peak times, the 4 Mbps appeared to perform worse than the 2Mbps.

I'm sure Virgin don't tell the whole story about how their connections work.
Frankly on the basis of my recent experience I wouldn't touch them with a
bargepole now.

I have been with them since the days of 1p/min dial-up.
About a month ago it seems that they combined all 3 seperate networks
together with the rollout of their claimed 20 Mbit service, so NTL,
Blueyonder and vigin.net customers it seems are now all sharing the same
date ways which don't seem to have been given the funds to cope so are
completely over-saturated.

It has got so bad that I have handed in my notification of cancellation
of all services. Packet loss even in the daytime means VOIP only works
sometimes.

They are on the verge of a sell-off so I can't see things improving for
a long while.

I would say at present they are without doubt _the_ worst ISP in the UK
for both service and reliabillity.

for the OP, I have a PAYG broadband connection from Entanet which is
about £12 / month including 3 GB data with additional bandwidth paid for
at £1/GB ( I connected trough UKFSN but there's a good coice of
re-sellers all selling the same service)

Personally I find the service and reliability more than satisfactory I
have the 20 Mb service and I always get it or near enough anyway
just one outage in all of my three years broken service with them
having jumped ship twice to go with robbing BT and their poxy adsl
BB service .
