chaning routers revisited - problems occurring.

I'm starting a new thread beacuse I'm having problems with setting my new
router up - can't get into the setup pages.

To repeat, I'm changing from a Linksys WAG54G to a Linksys WAG54GS - because
the old one is giving problems - connections to all 3 computers on the
network keep flickering on and off, whether the phone line is conected to
the router or not.

What I did was disconnect the phone line to the old router, leaving it
switched on. Then disconnected the cable from the Ethernet conection on the
back of my main computer.

I then connected the new router to the phone line and used the new Ethernet
cable to link to my computer. In my browser, as per the instructions I type
http://192.168.1.1 - sometimes this tells me it couldn't connect to the
site, and sometimes it calls up the password window - but when I type in
admin, admin (as per the instructions) it just doesn't accept the password
and keeps prompting me to type it in again.

Any ideas why either of those problems should be happening? Is there
anything I should know about the sequence of powering up the PC and the
router?

Cheers

OK, tried again just now - decided to press the reset button on the router
in the hope it might clear any errors that had crept in, and was bale to get
to the setup pages. Now have it working on my main computer, hardwired in.
presumably the second computer (which is also hardwired) shoud just plug in
and go. Then I have to move to the third computer which is conected via
wi-fi (because my wife won't let me run cables to that one beacuse of the
disruption to decor!!!). So I may be back - this is the first time I've
actually set all this stuff up myself - had it done by someone else before.
Great learning.

Cheers

Yep, that *should* do it!

Yup, make sure you set an encryption key in the router - if you had this
setup before, just set the SSID and encryption the same as the old router
then the wireless PC should just connect to the new router automatically!
(you will need to make sure the old router is off or reconfugured though!)

Sounds fairly resonable :-)

It's easy when you know how, just like everything really :-)

All went according to plan - thanks for the response. Now up and running
without the problems, so it's the final proof that it was the router at
fault.
