Changing provider from Virgin Net

Does anyone have experience with switching from Virgin's ADSL
connection to a different provider?

I am thinking of using virgin's free installation with no 12 month
contract offer as a cut price way of getting the wiring sorted so I
can switch to a provider that offers a more reasonable data limit (ie
more than the ten percent usage offered by virgin)

Thanks for any help,

Dave J.

IIRC Virgin Net are not totally devoid of intelligence, and don't support
migration. This means after the wires have been sorted for your Virgin Net
service and you cancel your contract, you have to wait for the wires to be
unsorted by BT and then pay another activation fee to another ISP to have
them re-sorted again. Save yourself the bother and just choose the right
ISP in the 1st place.

At the end of the day, ISPs pay a fairly fixed price to BT for providing you
with ADSL so they'll get their activation money somehow either through
increased subscription over a year or an activation fee.

Virgin are a signatory to the Ofcom Migration Code of Practice. If they
refuse migration, remind them of it.

Under the code you cannot use an outstanding debt or existing contract
to refuse a migration.

I've just read your link, and it rules out one route I was
considering, namely using Virgin's service the way ADSL should be used
and waiting for them to throw me off for doing so. It says quite
clearly that one of the times they can refuse the code is if the
contract has already been terminated. I like the bit that insists that
customers must be informed of the reasons for any refusal and allowed
an appeal.

Thanks.

As for their service, 20GB a MONTH ffs! I've had half that out of a
flamin POTS modem..

They fully deserve to be used as a cheap connection method and then
dumped ASAP, I was just hoping to confer with someone else about it as
it's worth a little messing but not too much..

I suspect there's some hidden clause to say that if you leave before 12
months, you will have to pay a connection fee.

No Virgin Net only ties you to a month, not 12 months
