Hi,

I have a broadband connection coming into my house router, which serves a
small home network. The router is NAT enabled. I am trying to establish a
vpn connection so that I can access my home network with my laptop from a
distant location. The problem I have is that the external ip address for my
home frequently changes. Whenever the connection needs resetting, it
obtains a new ip address from my network provider. I need this ip address
to make the vpn connection, and so I am looking for a method of being able
to identify this ip address remotely, possibly by having a computer on my
home network email it to an account when it changes or something?

Any and all suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Alan

You're first stop might be at your ISP. They can assign you a fixed IP
address, much easier all round. At the moment yours is dynamic.
Alternatively try something like www.dyndns.com.

Assuming you're running Windows on your PC you can probably do this with
a bit of scripting and Task Scheduler. Telnet into the router to get
the current IP address and save it to a file. Compare it to the
previous address saved in another file. If it's changed run an FTP
script to upload the new address to a website.

Your router may even have dyndns support built in, check in the configuration
settings.
