When you install Win98se, you have to create a user name and password. This
is used to log onto Windows.

1. How to I change the user name?
2. How do I change the password?

There is also a computer name, share names, and password for networked
shares, but those do not need to be changed.

Log on with a new name and set a new password. This may require you to
re-configure some settings that will remain in the old user account.

Following your method of creating a new user, will I be able to delete the
old user name then?

Or should I do what I did with Win95? That was very painstaking. I searched
the registry for that user name and renamed each instance manually. Then I
went into the Windows directory to rename the following user files: .wab,
..pwl, .acl, .arp. When I rebooted, Windows came up showing the new user
name, as well as the System applet in Control Panel. Will this same manual
method work in Win98se?

Yes, if you log on with a new user name and password you can then search for
the old account's password file (which will be named <username>.PWL) and
delete it. Editing the Registry should not be necessary - there may be
remnants of the old account there but they won't matter.

Mine is a similar question.

I have a lot of machines on my network with windows 98, none of them have
any username or password created, they autologon.

All of them were installed before I came.

Now, I have a new corporative antivirus and would like to install it
remotelly, however each computer ask me for a username and password.

I already try using Administrator and no password, however it refuse the
connection.

Does windows 98 set any default username/password for this kind of
difficulties or I will need to go to each computer, create a user/password
and transfer all information¿?

Windows 98 does not create any default user accounts, and does not contain
an Administrator account as Windows NT/2000/XP do. What happened to the
"autologon" you mentioned? If the computers are set to log on with no
username and password why did they suddenly start asking for one?

The network administrator from the corporate antivirus is the one that is
asking me the username/password of each computer on windows 98 to assign them
the policy and do remote installations.

Are you sure this product will work on Windows 98? That doesn't sound
right.

Yes, it works. Some computers does not ask me for username/password, others
ask me....

Sorry, you've stumped me. The only thing I can think of to try is to go to
one of the computers the product won't install on, click the Start button,
then select log off. Log on with a valid name and password and see if the
product will install remotely then.
