Hi do all ADSL modems work the same way? i.e. if it works for Wannadoo
broadband it will work with BT or AOL broadband? My brother is getting a
second computer for his son and wants to connect them both to the internet
and together. The computers will be back to back in 2 rooms so all they need
to connect is a cable through the wall (modern walls, paper thin) so would
this router be suitable as they both have NIC's and would an ethernet
modem/router be better than a USB modem.

Dynamode R-ADSL-C4 - router

Thanks Jackie

Yes. But the USB ones aren't very good.

You can't have two modems on one ADSL line. Your brother needs a combined
ADSL modem / router with more then one Ethernet port (usually come with
four).
These are pretty standard and work fine, but it will be wise to get one with
hardware firewall and maybe ADSL2 (future std.) capable.

Martin

"Not very good" in the sense that they are limited by USB features. I
wouldn't buy USB as a replacement or for higher ADSL speeds.

For a short-term solution I suppose the Internet Connection sharing in
Windows might be OK. It seems an option for when my brother visits at
Christmas, using the on-motherboard ethernet and a cheap switch I picked
up. For a permanent setup, a modem-router is the way to go, maybe even
with wireless networking.

The OP mentioned : Dynamode R-ADSL-C4 - router

AFAIK, that's a 4-port router, which someone asked about (but which had
no reviews) and on a quick check I see it is available at under 30 quid
from <http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/> unless the R-ADSL-C4S is rather
different to the R-ADSL-C4 ... Peter Morgan.

UK ADSL <http://tinyurl.com/dghgq> - Happy to save cash with Plus.Net!

Unsuitable for heavy downloaders, but fine for video/audio streaming.

I'd certainly think so - from both reliability and security

- reliability - the router stays online and will reconnect if ever
it needs to, and there's not much 'load' on the computer (v USB)

- security - a router (even without a built-in firewall) will do a
good job in blocking incoming traffic, because of NAT (Network
Address Translation)

The one you mentioned is available quite cheaply and even tempted me
to buy one, just to compare it with other similar (4-port) models. I
hope it serves them well... should do, IMHO. Peter M.
