Hi Folks,

How do you change the host name i.e. the Linux computer name and make it
permanent. I am using Mandrake version 10.1?

I tried using namehost command but it changed the computers name back to
localhost on boot up :-(.

Thanks,

Martin

net etiquette/Newsgroup tip:

Multi-posting is considered antisocial on Usenet.

If you want to send the same message to more than one newsgroup, CROSSPOST!
And if you crosspost, provide a Followup newsgroup.

Some will argue that you not even crosspost because of the amount/type
of newsgroups that we have today.

As an example to post to "comp.os.linux.security", and
"alt.security", use the following Newsgroups line:
Newsgroups: comp.os.linux.security,alt.security
Followup-To: comp.os.linux.security

See http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/usenet/xpost.html

See config files to modify given in the other newsgroup you posted to.

Easy. Edit /etc/hostname with your favourite text editor.

Hi jafar,

I used the MCC (Mandrake Control Centre) and Internet Settings, which
allows me to change the Host Name from KDE GUI front end.

Thanks anyway :-).

Is there a good place to hunt down answers to questions like this?
Googling doesn't always to get me to where I want to be. This question has
just got to be on a FAQ somewhere hasn't it?

Martin

Hmmm, can not be that hard.
Results 1 - 10 of 952 for set hostname group:*mandrake*. (0.17 seconds)

http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search
set hostname in the first box
*mandrake* in Newsgroup box. You need to use the two
asterisks around mandrake

If you want/need more control over the first box search,

You are welcome. Alwasy glad to see someone who wants to learn.

Too bad you failed to read the last line. I posted where the hostname is
stored in config files used during boot on Mandrake in the other news
group where you posted the question.

Seems the OP lost the overview, probably due to sad
multi-posting. ;( But then what would you expect from just
another Outcrap user.

Umm - better see "man hostname, info hostname and hostname --help".
/bin/hostname is an elf binary.

Even better, Mandrake sets the host.domain name from the config file
which you have access to from the gui interface called Mandrake Control Center

cat /etc/sysconfig/network
HOSTNAME=wb.home.invalid <==========
NETWORKING=yes
GATEWAY=192.168.2.1
NETWORKING_IPV6=no
GATEWAYDEV=eth0
