I have tried to change the structure of my wireless network from ad hoc to
intranet. When I tried to connect my computer with Windows XP to the accecc
point I got a message that my computer didn't allow connection to an access
point. The message recommended changes in Properties for Wireless Networks in
Windows. However I can't find a way to specify this particular property.
The problem was solved by reinstallation of the wireless card in the
computer. But I think it must be possible to specify the type of network in a
simpler way.
Does anyone know how?

When your laptop is not in range of a wireless network (even when it is) and
you have an adhoc profile in your profiles... it will start an adhoc
network. Removing the adhoc profile, or moving it down on the preffered list
(view wireless networks > change advanced settings > wireless networks
(tab)) will allow it to connect to a infrastructer first... if you dont use
adhoc networks, you can disable it in the advanced button next to the
prefered list (change it to access points only).
You may have changed this setting before to adhoc only. and once you
reinstalled it changed back to normal.

Actually that is what happened, I just tested it myself.
You had changed the setting to adhoc networks only, in that advanced button.
It tells you exactly the steps to take to remedy the situation if you read
the popup.
