Good morning gentlemen and thank you in advance for your help!

Our company has a single ADC and until today it was working fine interacting
with Windows 98 users. We have about 5 Windows 98 workstations and today one
of them is having problems logging in. The same computer was working OK
yesterday and to my knowledge nothing has change.

When the user tries to login from this computer, a message " You are not
able to log into a domain...." appears. You can select yes or cancel. When
selecting cancel it prompts you for the password and the cycle repeats
itself. When you press OK it goes into the computer but the access to the
network is limited. The user is able to access e-mail, most of the share
directories, but not network printers. When trying to access the network
printers it asks me for a password.

I do not understand this behavior. Please advise any suggestion on how to
correct this issue.

Thank you once again for your help.

Make sure the workgroup name is the same and that you check the options to
login to the domain and that the domain is correct. Make sure it is pointing
to the correct WINS server as well. Can you map a drive to the DC once
you've logged in? This typically tells you that the NETBIOS resolution is
correct. Also make sure that the necessary DC is in WINS and that there are
no browsing issues. This is typically related to the Master Browser entry
and Win98 cannot find the DC.

It is actually the <domainname 1C> entry it needs to login, rather than
the DMB, which is the <domainname 1B> entry.

Thank you for your help.

The system was working fine the day before. All of the network setups are
fine. The WINS is working OK. I checked everything you suggested and I just
can't map a drive to the DC. No permissions is the error. We have some
Win98 computers and they are working OK.

Thank you for your help! Any other suggestions?

Bill Thank you for your help.

What do you mean by, Domain 1C which is the domain 1B?

I do not understand. Thank you!

That reply was directed to Scott.

To get back to your problem. W98 uses Netbios names to find a logon
server. If it is set up to use WINS, it looks to WINS to resolve the IP
address of the logon server. The logon server registers its name in WINS as
<domainname 1C> for this purpose.

When a client logs in, it sends a request to WINS to find the domain
controller for the domain. (This is a name request for the special name
<domainname 1C> ). WINS should reply with the IP address of your domain
controller, and the client then connects to the server.

Does WINS have one (and only one) entry for your domain name with the 1C
special character?

The <domainname 1B> entry is similar, but that is used to find the
domain master browser, not the domain controller. In many networks this is
the same machine, but you need both entries in WINS.
