How good are the laptops with Centrino built-in wireless compared to buying
a PC-Card? Its the same chipset on all laptops. Right? Therefore, they
should all perform about the same if they have similar antenna
configurations. Not sure about the later, which could affect range.

I have Centrino notebook and have used PCMCIA
cards with wireless. I have also used USB wireless
units which typically are attached to the end of about
a 6 foot cable.Of course the USB wins, hands down,
because you can orient it for the best signal. The other
two are a toss-up. However, if you can find a special
wireless issue of PC Mag, out this month, it runs tests
on about all of them out to 160 feet. It might be worth
noting that a pair of hams at the latest shoot-out in Vegas
got 32 miles using good antennas. That is the divider
I guess. Regards
