Bought myself a Sony Vaio, with a 2.8GHz Centrino P4

Can't for the life of me figure out how to turn on the Centrino's
Wi-Fi capabilty; have had to resort to using the PCMCIA card from my
daughter's laptop, but she's not happy.

I must be missing something really obvious.

Can anyone help me in the right direction, please?

cheers

BJ

as far as i know, centrino (p4-m) cpu's only go up to 2.4ghz at the moment.
are you absolutely sure you have a centrino laptop in your hands? if you can
see the centrino sticker, try to find the button to turn it on. you can use
this button to turn off the wireless card to conserve battery life. (this
button is on most centrino laptops, don't know if it's on the sony vaio)

A friend couldn't get the wireless going on his new Toshiba notebook. It
turned out there was a switch that had to be turned on, to enable the
wireless. Might this be the situation you're experiencing.

Hmmm, no Centrino sticker - so it looks as though it may not have
wi-fi built in

It's a very new model - PCG-GRT816s - I really can't believe that it's
not wi-fi capable, and I'm sure that it was mentioned in the sales
blurb.

Time for a trip back to the shop I think.

cheers

The specification for that model (that I have in front of me) makes no
mention of a wireless adapter. It states the processor as being a
Pentium 4 2.8GHz, built in modem and built in ethernet card.

It's not a Centrino. NONE of the Centrinos go that high in clock rate.
They're all in the 1.6 range. Centrino is Pentium-M, NOT Penitum 4M.

My brother in law has a Toshiba portable which has just such a switch (a
physical switch on the side of the case), but we couldn't find any hint of
the wi-fi unit in the Device Manager. Then we unscrewed the little panel
underneath where the wi-fi unit is supposed to be, and there wasn't one,
though there was a socket and a wire lead with a taped up connector. This
laptop is one of a range of similar models with slighthly different
specifications, so we guessed it wasn't a mistake, but an option that this
particular model didn't have. Could it be that the same istrue of your
Sony? Have a look for an unscrewable panel underneath, similar to but
separate from the memory compartment. If there is one, you may be able to
add the unit as an upgrade. If not, you'll have to buy a card.

rod.
