Cellular phone as modem thru wvdial

For ages I been trying to figure out how to use a GSM mobile phone as a
GPRS modem under Linux. No one seemed to know.

Then I sussed it out - thru using wvdial.

I emailed Avery, a wvdial developer, and s/he had never heard of it.

Have I discovered something new? Or is this common knowlidge? Anyone
want me to post a HOWTO?

If you've got the knowledge and the ability to write clearly, then please
do -- Usenet and its archive is the place for such things, if only we could
entice people to use the search capabilites.

wvdial is a program to start up pppd using a heuristic chat program.
It has nothing to do with mobile phones GPRS modems or whatever.
You need to attach a modem to your computer, and wvdial and lots of other
programs (www.theory.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html) will then use that. If
your mobile phone has modem software in it ( and usually a pretty poor
implimentation of ppp) then you can use that modem.
