What causes 'loss of synchronisation'?

I posted yesterday regarding a disconnection problem. After performing a
factory reset and upgrade of the Netgear router's software, the problem went
away for a while. The improved software in the router has now shown more
information in the logs.

The problem has still happened but not so frequently...

Sat, 2006-05-13 22:10:01 - Loss of synchronization :1
Sat, 2006-05-13 22:10:08 - LCP down.
Sat, 2006-05-13 22:10:10 - Initialize LCP.
Sat, 2006-05-13 22:10:10 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Sat, 2006-05-13 22:10:17 - CHAP authentication success
Sat, 2006-05-13 22:17:46 - LCP down.
Sat, 2006-05-13 22:17:48 - Initialize LCP.
Sat, 2006-05-13 22:17:48 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Sat, 2006-05-13 22:17:56 - CHAP authentication success
Sat, 2006-05-13 22:18:01 - Loss of synchronization :2
Sun, 2006-05-14 08:24:07 - Administrator login successful - IP:192.168.0.2


Has this been caused by my line being upgraded to 8mbps?

very likely, you now have a small SNR margin with little room for
increased noise, extra interference can take out the connection.
