DSL arrives at my modem over an ordinary telephone wire normally used only for voice.
The data comes out of the modem in the much larger and less flexible Cat5; then the number cables multiplies on the exit side of the router.
Is any company looking at this to use a smaller cable which would reduce clutter, etc.?

Yes. That's wireless wifi - no cables :-)
