Carey,
Your networking tips on http://www.careyholzman.com/netfixes.htm are
great.
Thanks for your effort.
My config is 2 PCs, Me and W/2000, connected with a Crossover cable.
I got it to work after a long and painful battle..
1 Question and 1 remark.
Question: Is IPX/SPX really needed? I installed it, but eventually
removed it and installed NetBEUI. Everything works 100%.
Remark: Since your page refers to several OSs, you might consider more
explanations about where the network definitions are (for example, for
Win/ME: Start - Settings - Control panel - Network or RMB on "Network"
and select "Properties").
Thanks,

Noam

Noam,

I believe that IPX/SPX is only required if you are trying
to connect to a Novell network.

As explained on the web page, the instructions offered are not a 'How to
Install' a network,. they are
'How to Fix' a network.

IPX is used as a diagnostic. For most people, if it works, they don't care
why and just leave it installed. For others, it helps point them in the
right direction to determine the cause of their networking problems.

So, is IPX needed? Only if you want it to be.

Carey, thanks for your reply.
On your page, under TIP #1: HOW TO RESET YOUR NETWORKING
CONFIGURATION, IPX/SPX is mentioned both in items 2 and 3, and I
understood this as a "must", not a "nice to have". If it's for
diagnostics, you might want to state this.
Also, would it be safe to say the NetBEUI can replace IPX/SPX?

Please don't take this as criticism - I want to help you make your
instructions better, for the benefit of people in the future.
Regards,

Noam

Carey will undoubtedly be annoyed with me but I'll answer anyway. :-)

If you must add IPX/SPX or NetBEUI to your network for it to work properly,
that means that something in the TCP/IP stack is screwed up or your TCP/IP
settings are incorrect. Some sites recommend adding multiple protocols
instead of finding the root cause of the problem and that's not a good thing
at all. All that does is slow down startup and shutdown and mask the true
cause of the networking difficulties.

There is never a reason that you need to add any other protocol to make
TCP/IP work correctly. Period.
