Capping - data per month revisited

Hi,

I have a question regarding adsl connections capped to 1 Gb.

I am assuming that this means that 1 Gb of data can be downloaded over a
mon-month period. What I don't quite understand is how that can be
reflected in terms of actual use - for instance, if the ADSL user listens
to 2 hours of radio via internet, how close would he be to his 1 Gb
ceiling?

TIA

Agustin

It can mean the total downloaded and uploaded..

You can either install a program like http://www.dumeter.com/ which will
measure the usage or you can use a usage calculator like
http://www.metronet.co.uk/adsl/adsl-calc - of course it depends on the rate
the radio station is broadcasting its stream as well..

Regards
Sunil

Assuming that the radio stream is 128kbps (as commonly found on
Shoutcast/Winamp Internet radio) you're talking at about 112.5MiB for
two hours listening. So you'd max out your 1GB cap in less than ten
days if you if you listened to the radio for two hours a day...

You could, of course, listen to lower bitrate streams designed for
modems and ISDN connections, that would let you listen to more before
reaching your cap.

See

for some examples.

Say the connection is a 512K connection, 512 Kbit/s is 64K Bytes a
second, which is 230MB an hour.

So, one GB is about four hours full speed use per month.

I think.

Someone will correct me if my sums are wrong. Personally I would not
begrudge the extra six or seven pounds per month that makes the
difference between four hours per month and 24 hours per day.

That is right, but does not answer the OP :-)

He was not asking how long he could use it for at maximum throughput.

Internet radio will usually be streamed at somewhere between 28K and
56K. You can have it on and hardly notice the effect on your web
browsing and other downloading, because it is using less than 10% of
your connection.
