If you feel you have to limit your online activities then (IMO) a capped
service is not for you.

Graham.

Depends on how much you intend to download..! Not much point in paying for
unlimited if you're only going to use 1GB or so..!

Depends on what you think you will do once on broadband. How many
computers is not really relevant.

If you just want email, text newsgroups and general web browsing, like
dial-up but on all the time / daytime then no worries get a 1Gb cap and
save the pennies.

If you think you will download a few games, music tracks, watch a few
BBC news videos, then get a 1Gb cap that allows automatic data limit
extensions. You might not need to go over but nice to know you will not
get cut off.

If you reckon you will do a lot of the above, perhaps a 2Gb or 3Gb is
more appropriate, again moveable.

If you will be listening to online radio for hours / day, downloading a
lot of programmes, binary newsgroups etc then you do need to consider a
service with a high cap (15Gb), or an unenforced one.

Not sure where online games feature, guessing not too bad on data transfer ?

Why not download NicMeter and monitor to your usage for a while. Then
you will have a better idea of your real needs.

You can get NicMeter for free from:

Not really, when there's no way you would watch a whole film from
CinemaNow.com (or you would need to use an ISP with no forced drop
if you were, to pull 4-600 MB from that end). Peter M.

I'm going with an uncapped service to start, then average my usage
over a few months. If I consistently use only a few Gb, then my
account will be modified accordingly.

It is ultimately a question that only you can answer.

I never know in these "capped or uncapped" conversations whether
people are talking about real limits or about "pay for more"
arrangementts over an inclusive data volume.

How many ISPs actually do anything if you exceed their "cap" - in most
cases (BT Retail, Wanadoo) it appears to be a forward looking
statement of intent

Does your uncapped service provide you with usage figures? I'm with
Pipex Solo500 package which is unlimited and, so, they don't provide a
usage monitoring facility. Which is why I use NicMeter to monitor
things so that I can change to a more appropriate package later if I wish.

At the moment I use ntl, and I don't believe there is a way to view my
usage statistics. When I move to Plusnet in a month or so I'll be able
to use their Control Panel to see all I need to.
