I need some help. I am trying to connect 2 houses 400 feet apart line
of site. I am using a DI-614+ and a Cantenna on the other end. It
just doesn't make it. Can anyone tell me what is the max cable lenght
between the Cantenna and the card?? I tried cantennas on both ends
but it is too hard to align. Can I use a wall mount directional or an
Omni directional off the DI-614 and use point the cantenna hooked to
the card at it. Any help would be greatly appreceiated!!!

You need to have a higher gain antenna on the D-Link AP side. 400 feet is
pretty far for that to reach. Put something like a 9 dBi omni outside the
building with the D-Link AP and point your cantenna at it through a window
at the client-side building. If your distance is more than 400 feet, you
might think about putting both the antennas outside. - When judging how far
your AP can broadcast, just think about a 2.4 Ghz cordless phone. If you
could talk on a 2.4Ghz cordless phone with the base station where your AP is
and the handset in the location of the client machine (and not have static
or other interferance disrupting your phone conversation) then it is likely
that a consumer grade AP should be able to reach that far. 400 feet is
probably too far.

As to max cable length, that depends on the cable and the amount of gain
your cantenna provides. LMR-400 cable only has about 6 dB loss over 100
feet. A 12.5 dBi cantenna could have 100 feet of LMR-400 plus the
connectors and still easily be useful for the distance you need (with direct
line of sight).

I did a 1.6 mile link this weekend with two Yagi antennas. Both antennas
are 12.5 dBi. Both locations have 25 feet of LMR-400, pigtail connectors,
lightening protectors, and grounds - and I was able to get a full 10 megabit
connection between a netgear 802.11b AP and a Linksys client card.

Depending on the coverage needed in the other house... Is this wireless
link just for your use, or are there also wireless clients in the other
building?

You might try some parabolas or corner reflectors.
If you have two antennas on the WAP, you could point one toward your house.

I used the EZ-10 corner reflector, because I had some difficulty forming
the parabola, and the EZ-10 was enough gain for me.
