I don't know bout you lot but I simply can't wait for BT to release 4Mb and
8Mb nationwide. Not due to the increase in downstream (my 2Mb is plently
fast enough) but for double or more upstream! 256Kb is starting to feel
really really slow when I'm sending those big files!

Sending over 200Mb files is just painfully slow.

When is that going to happen?

doubt more than a few will get double upstream as it's rate-adaptive and
dependent on several factors, but should be an imorovement anyway over
256Kbps. There's only a limited bit of the 'spectrum' that the upstream
can occupy but it's well overdue time for an improvement.

I'd be pretty suprised if someone on 2Mb now was unable to get at least
512Kb upstream.

8Mb and 4Mb are rumoured to be out late this year or early next year.

ADSL will only give 256 upstream whether the down stream is 512Kbps,
1Mbps or 2Mbps. When SDAL is implemented then asymmetry will disappear
and the upstream will get quicker.

Um explain what you mean because I don't think you understood the original
post.

From what I've seen of the trials, where people can get ~4Mb on the
downstream, the upstream increases to around 384 kbps. It's possible
some products will have up to the promised 768kbps upstream on MaxDSL
but I doubt many people will achieve this (and you'd need to be on an
Office 20:1 provision as opposed to Home 50:1 the way BT are looking at
doing it last I heard).

My SNR upstream margin is reported at 25dB.
AIUI, this is measured at the exchange end, and reported back to my
modem, so it should be accurate.
Is it as simple as quadrupling the speed to 1Mb/s upstream should
give an upstream margin of 25-12 = 13dB or so?

Hi Ian,

I'm pretty sure you can't apply the same rule of thumb to the upstream
signal margins, as it's on a different frequency range and bandwidth (as
in width of frequency band). If the rule held, I'd be able to get 1Mbit
upstream at 3km from the exchange given the figures I get. In reality
you need to be significantly closer.
