Can't see wireless router

My computer can see other wireless networks but can't see my wireless router
even though security is set to none. The router is normally next to the
computer but I have also tried it several feet away with the same result.
Any ideas why and how to resolve this please?

Thanks.

OK taking your other post into account ...

1) Computer can't see your wireless router, but can see other wireless
routers.

Conclusion, wireless router is not transmitting. But:

2) Laptop can see the wireless router, and connects to it.

Conclusion, wireless router is transmitting OK.

This is a contradiction, so questions the accuracy of your statements. For
example, how do you know the laptop is connecting to your wireless router.
IPCONFIG would tell you which router it is actually communicating with, and
would show you the address of the wireless router so you could confirm it is
the right one, and it is your internet connection.

Suggestion: connect computers to router using ethernet cable. Open router
management page, disable wireless. Leave ethernet cables in place.

And router is transmitting on an EU specific channel but the computer only
supports the US channel set. That one got me for ages over last Christmas.

Thanks. I now have the two computers side-by side. The Laptops detects 4
networks and the desktop detects only one of those - but not my network. I
have changed through all 13 channels with the consistent result of Laptop
(same) 4, Desktop (same) 1. Does this help at all in diagnosing the cause
of the problem?

How did you resolve the problem last Christmas? How do you unhide the SSID?

The wireless card in the desktop computer works OK with my other wireless
router which suggests it is OK and not faulty? The answer possibly lies in
configuring the Livebox: But how??

Thanks.

Hmmm. Channels 12 and 13 are the EU specific ones so as you've tried lower
channels then its not the same problem.

I used a PCMCIA card for the laptop. Hammer to crack a nut really but
really couldn't face monkeying around with someone elses wireless.

The SSID hiding should be an option on the wireless settings somewhere on
the livebox.

Bill,

I have a vague memory of similar problems.

Even if the SSID is set to not broadcast it WILL appear in XP's list if
you have ever connected to it. So just because the laptop is showing the
SSID doesn't mean it is being broadcast.

I seem to remember that if you explicitly tell XP NOT to connect to (or
it might be disconnect from) a particular SSID , then it doesn't offer
you that SSID in the future without doing something specific. It
remembers that you don't want to connect. This may only be for non
broadcast SSID's but I seem to remember a warning box about future
connection when I clicked disconnect.

If enabling SSID broadcast doesn't solve the problem, three routes that
MIGHT fix it.

1 Go into the advanced settings of the wireless network setup. See if
the SSID is on the list - it might say disabled; If its there at all try
deleting it and rebooting.

2 Try changing the SSID on the router.

3 Install something like Netstumbler and see what it says.

Regards

Another idea ...

Some network devices only work with 802.11B, others with 802.11G (the higer
data rate version). Most modern devices work with both.

Your desktop computer might only work with .11B and the router might be set
only to transmit .11G That would explain why the desktop computer
apparently fails to see a router which to other computers appears to be
working.

It was set to b+g so presumably it should work with either. Anyway I have
tried b and g separately it still doesn't want to see the Livebob.

You are aware of the function of the pairing mode button on the Livebox?
