Hi all, I have a curious problem with one of my notebooks...

I recently had the need to switch this unit from a dynamic IP to a static
address. To my dismay, i cannot see or change properties.
When I do a properties on the connection, it shows only 1 icon - "Client for
Microsoft Networking". There are no other visible
services and protocols to choose from.

If I try to add a service or protocol, I get the following error - "Could
not add the requested component. The error is: The system
could not find the file specified.". Even with install CD in the drive, it
doesnt even try to access the CD for the information.

The unit in question is an IBM Thinkpad, Win 2K, SP4.

Thanks in advance,

Darren

Actually it seems you can see the card properties but
that IP is not installed and therefore you cannot see
any IP properties.

Caveat: I don't know the answer -- this is one of those
device-driver-hardware-bug etc problems probably.

Is the card working? My bet is no.

Best guess would be to try to re-install the DRIVER, or
upgrade the driver for this NIC.

Second idea: if it is a built-in NIC, consider adding
any BIOS upgrades for the Laptop itself.

Oh, and third idea which you might try first <grin>:
Visit the IBM support site and look for any upgrades
or troubleshooting help you can find.

I don't own any IBMs but based on the quality of the
help I get from Dell, HP, and even no-name vendors,
I will bet that you will find much hardware help there
for free on their site.

Yes, the Nic seems to be working fine, as thats the Nic I'm currently using
to send this message and browse the groups. Can also see the other
computers on my net as well as the DC.

D :-)

So IP is installed despite it being missing from the LAN
card configuration?

I would still (or especially still) consider this likely a
driver/hardware problem anyway.

In one of my latests experiences with the evil XP-Home I discovered that
none of the normal properties can be reached if the Nic has been "bridged"
with another adapter. Eliminating the "bridging" returned the properties to
what I normally expect to see. In the machine I dealt with the Nic was
"bridged" with the "firewire interface".

It was also a laptop.

Well, that is true for ALL XP and even Win2003 server.

Once bridged, the physical NICs are pretty much unavailable
(at lest to IP) because the IP settings are no on the virtual or
newly created "bridge NIC" which represents all of the
physical NICs comprising the bridge.
