Can't restore DHCP database

Hi,
I backedup my DHCP database on DC#2 and restored it to another server, DC#1
in the same Windows 2003 domain. Both machines are Domain Controllers.

I then rebuilt DC#2.

I backedup the DHCP database on DC#1 and attempted to restore it to the new
DC#2, but it fails to restore with the errors shown below.

I can create a new configuration on the DC#2 and I can backup and restore it
too. But I still can't restore the database from DC#1 or any other database
from a few other servers.

Any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks!

Hello Bob,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, please try to do the following steps to test the issue:

- Verify DHCP is running under the localsystem account
- Run regsrv32 ole32.dll
- Uninstall and Reinstall DHCP
- Start DHCP service

For more detailed steps about how to move DHCP database, please refer to:
325473: How to move a DHCP database from a computer that is running Windows
NT Server 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003 to a computer that is
running Windows Server 2003

Ken Zhao

Hi Ken,

The "Run regsrv32 ole32.dll" resulted in "regsrv32 is not recognized...".
Maybe because this is a x64 version of Enterprise Edition? (The DHCP export
is from a 32-bit version).

Under normal mode, removing the DHCP role and adding it back did not help.

In either normal mode or Directory Services restore mode, running the "netsh
dhcp server import c:\dhcpdatabase.txt all" resulted in a similar message
"The system cannot find the file specified".

I just got it to work. There was a typo in the "Run regsrv32 ole32.dll"
command.
Using "Run regsvr32 ole32.dll" "svr" rather than "srv" solved MOST
everything.

I still get the original error messages when I use the snap-in to restore
the database, but if I remove the machine from the network, reinstall DHCP,
and use the "netsh dhcp server import c:\dhcpdatabase.txt all" command, that
does work.

I guess I still have an underlying problem someplace, because I still can
not use the DHCP console backup/restore to copy a database between servers.

Thanks KEN!
