Can't renew/repair IP address

I'm having trouble connecting to my broadband connection. I connect through a
cable modem with an Ethernet cable. When I try to repair my IP address of my
network connection, it stays the same. My ISP said the address is similar to
one of a computer that's connected to a router, but my computer isn't,
anymore. What can be done to fix my IP address?

try to re-cycle the cable modem..power it off for like 15 seconds and power
it back on..then run a ipconfig/release and then a ipconfig/renew from the
command line and see if that gets you back on...i know this might sound silly
but make sure your set up for DHCP as well...

Actually, when I try to run ipconfig, I get an error message, something close
to "ipconfig is not an executable file" and "there was a problem with the
syntax" or something like that.

then you need to install TCP/IP..if you already have it installed delete it
or remove it and then reinstall...sometimes those windows gremlins can goof
up your configs....
