Can't release IP address in Windows 98

When I connect the computer to my home network I had no
problem going in winipcfg and releasing/renewing the IP
address. I was able to get onto the internet no
problem. The problem is that when I connect this pc to
an ADSL modem I can't release the IP using winipcfg. The
pc was using this ADSL connection prior to me cleaning it
up and getting it to stop locking up. I would appreciate
any help in solving this issue. Thanks.

You can only release the IP address if it was assigned by a DHCP
server. If there's no IP address, or if its an automatic private IP
address (169.254.x.x), it wasn't assigned by DHCP, so it can't be
released. In that case, just try to renew the IP address.
