Hope someone can help with this. Hubby recently upgraded to a new system
running xp. Was running w98se on old system and had no problems with
printing. He now can't print to the printer attached to my computer running
w98se. I've double checked all the settings. The printer is set for sharing
and has no passwords. The name is only 7 characters long. He is able to
access my files when I have them set for sharing. Not sure if I have to
install an xp driver on my computer or not? Thanks for any help.

No, you don't need an XP printer driver on your computer.

Make sure that printer sharing is enabled on your computer:

1. Go to Control Panel | Network.
2. Click the button labeled "File and Printer Sharing".
3. Put a check mark in the box "I want to be able to allow others to
print to my printer(s)."

On your hubby's computer, click Control Panel | Printers and Other
Hardware | Printers and Faxes. Does it show your printer? If not,
click "Add a printer" and follow the prompts to install it.

What exactly happens when he tries to print to your printer? If
there's an error message, what does it say?

I came here hunting for an answer to the exact same problem.
Win98se is sharing an hp laserjet 3330MFP.
Installed a pc with xp pro.
xp said the win98se server did not have xp drivers installed and could not
continue.

Are you having any trouble seeing files on SE from XP?
In hunting an answer to my trouble "ME-SE has me on my knees", I ran across
an article about the browse master setting. It did say that in negotiating
who is the master, XP would have a higher order of control compared to SE. I
think it placed 95, 98, & SE on the same level. NT & 2K were also mentioned,
but ME wasn't and I don't know if ME is trying to be the master over SE in
my set up. The article did say a master could be assigned, auto to on, and
all other machines to off. But it didn't say if this would override a mix of
OS's.

Do please post back your fix. I certainly hope this doesn't mean if you
upgrade one to XP or add one to your environment that you need to
reconfigure all around that XP machine or else upgrade all to XP.
That would certainly have me looking at getting a linux box to act as a
server.

I was able to issue the net use lpt2: \\win98se\printer and print to the dos
app without even installing a printer via the add printer icon in xp pro.
I don't think you can use lpt1: because there is a lpt1: port on your
computer. Read that at M$ somewhere.
But I ended up having to get an ethernet print server from here
http://www.hawkingtech.com/prodSpec.php?ProdID=181 because the HP would spit
out garbage pages with this particular dos app from other computers
including the server and obviously xp needs a printer for windows apps.

One very interesting message came up when i was installing the hawking. It
warned me that the printer name was too long?!
Although my sharename when hooked up to the server was just HP, the actual
printer name in the printers folder (the one hp gives it) was "HP something
really long (PCL 5e)."
Before the hawking thing, we were grasping at straws and hooked up an hp1100
to an lpt2: card on the win98se server. Before I take it down tomorrow, I
will change the printer name in the printers folder to something less than
or equal to 8 characters and see if that was the missing link all along for
the havoc with the dos app spitting out garbage pages.
Thanks!!

Returned the piece of crap hawkingtech.com parallel port print server.

using a spare win98se pc that is dedicated for being a print server.
have to do it this way do to the nature of the dos program.
the local computer loses the print job if someone else on the network prints
to it.

This, strangly enough, would be the way Microsoft would prefer you to do
