I have a network of 2 pc, the first one server 2003 the second winXp. The net
goes in internet by a router.
These are the parameters :
server :
ip 192.168.1.76
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1 (the router)
DNS 212.216.112.112 (internet dns)
xp :
ip 192.168.1.77
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1 (the router)
DNS 212.216.112.112 (internet dns)
sometime i can ping sometime not... and the server doesen't see the xp in
the MSHOME group and viceversa...
I turned on and off the firewall but it's the same.....
Can anyone help me ?
thanks in advance arturo gatta

As my previous reply. It is better to use your internal DNS instead of the ISP DNS. Also enable netbios over tcp/ip.

Use Internal DNS server if available on Corporate netowrks. If you have a
router that acts as a DNS server, use its IP.
Example sometimes you can use your routers IP as a DNS server if its
supported.
Leave your router setup to obtain IP and DNS from ISP(unless static). ISPs
like to change DNS servers.

Setup your computers network settings to obtain from your DHCP server or
router.
If you are statically configuring your network settings. Use the same
setting for the gateway and DNS server. Your gateway may respond to dns
queries.

It makes it a lot easier when your ISP changes DNS servers.
All you may need to do is reboot your router, and let it get new settings.

Example most Linksys routers and cisco routers support this feature.

OK now i think i have the answer.

The version i was trying, was windows server 2003 SP2 "EVALUATE edition".....
i think that it is possible to use the server in every configuration you
want, BUT, it's simply disabled the access and the functionality to the NetBT
driver. So you can't connect to it by network (i didn't try telnet). I say
this after 1 week spent to make the netBios over tcp run. I try wins,
LMHOSTS,netBeui, ipx .... every what, nothing, i can't see the server on the
net. I'm surprised about in every Microsoft technet zone, i didn't find the
problem. Only for an impossible access to this service (NetBt) for the
win2000 server, becouse of not administrator rights.
Now, i get back to XP, and carry on with my work.

Thansk again Arturo.
