did you set the server to have a static ip address? did you exclude this
address from the router dhcp server? this is probably not your problem, but
it is good practice.
are you trying to ping by ip address or computer name? try both - which
fails? if ip address, then there is possibly a firewall or security settings
issue. if by computer name, then there is possibly a name-resolution issue.
you may want to consider enabling wins on the 2k3 server. it is a pretty
straight-forward service, not too complicated and it should make
name-resolution on your network a lot more reliable; however, to enable wins
the server must have a static ip.
