I trying to fix a friends computer that has stopped being able to access the internet. (dialup

Everything on the computer is old (read not updated) so I decided I'd connect it to my router (broadband) an
update things and this might correct things

The router (etgear RP614) assigns everything (winipcfg) ok but I can't ping the router. I can ping 127.0.0.1

I have removed some spyware using Spybot but since I can't connect to the internet I can't get the latest update

I found an internet speed up tool called Marketscore that had put some stuff on the computer but most was removed by spybot

I have removed all of Communications and done the Winsock fix

I have looked through Carey Holzman's setup and troubleshooting guide but was only able to get the computer to see itself on the network

I believe the problem is now donw to the can't ping the router but I'm stumped as to what is causing it? It seems to be that I'm going one way on the ethernet connection. I've switched ports and cables and the network card worked it the computer i removed it from

Any ideas?

I have used the first link and when I went to the second I saw it says that I first must be able to ping the DNS numbers. I can't even ping the router

I just ran it again and it finds four entries and shows the repairs complete but their are zeros in front of each item. I assume this means nothing was found that was wrong

I'm not sure if it's necessary to use more than one of the links the wording sort sounds like any one will do

I noticed a reference to ZoneZlarm on this computer but it doesn't seem to be installed now. Is it possible something from that install is causing this?

Yes, sometimes the uninstalls don't work correctly. You might try
reinstalling and then uninstalling ZoneAlarm.
