Can't ping after Connecting with VPN

When I connect to a remote network via VPN I can't ping some of the
computers on the network.
Some of them respond about half of the time and others not at all (request
time out). I thought it might be
a problem with my local network having the same address but that is not the
case.
I can ping all the computers just fine if I ping from inside the network.
That is if I sit at any of the
computers on the remote network and ping a machine that won't respond to
ping over VPN.
So I can successfully authenticate and connect but other than that
connectivity is dead.

I have WRT54G router with firewall disabled and VPN allowed.
Use Server 2003 with RAS installed and AD with a user being allowed
to connect remotely.

Thanks a million for any suggestions.

1. The IP is not routed over the VPN server. Enable IP routing.

OK. I ahve linksys WRT54G. Is there any way i can find out how to configure
it to route IP properly?

2. Both sites, VPN server and VPN client, are using the same IP range, for
example, 192.168.1.x/255/255/255/0. Assign the different IP range or subnet.

that's not it. My client is on 192.168.0.x network and server is 192.168.1.x
network

3. Both VPN server and VPN client are assigned the same IP by a router. For
example both are using 10.0.0.110. you may assign IP using RRAS IP pool or
switch DHCP from the router to the Windows DHCP (case SC101905).

Yep. configured IP pool. Doesn't it mean if problem 2 is resolved then the
problem 3 is automatically resolved as well?

If clients are on different subnets then they will have different IP
addresses?

thank you very much

there is something else. I can ping the vpn server and can ping the file
server.
Most of the ping are successful. However when i ping another computer
on the network I get no successful ping at all. they all time out.
Why would some ping packets be discarded but not others?
I can ping machine successfully while on the network.

Hey bud,

Before getting into all those questions you asked, I seen your model number
and the solution may be easier then we originally thought.
Linksys recently released a firmware update patching VPN passthrough on that
router model. The original firmware on the device will not allow VPN
connections to work properly. I THINK it's firmware 1.1, check out their
website for more information. If this doesn't work then we can proceed the
troubleshooting process!

Hope this helps,

Yes. I've seen those reports saying that there are problems with this
model letting VPN traffic through, However i think I do have the latest

that's version 1.00.6. That's what i have installed on the router.
I've also seen some hacked firmwares floating around the web.
Would it be worth it trying those. My only question is. When i apply
those hacked firmwares will all my settings on the router be erased?

thanks a lot for replying.

Is your linksys the first version of the WRT54G? Apparently the first
versions of the device has this as an known issue, they fixed it in later
versions going with what I read. For WRT54G in other versions there are
later firmware updates past the 1.006.

If you are considering trying a third party firmware, I would write down all
your settings just in case. If this is an in production wireless, do the
firmware update after hours incase you need to roll back.. Oh and yeah, make
sure you CAN roll back incase the firmware upgrade is junk. Otherwise it's
limitations on the hardware it self. I would contact Linksys or purchase a
compatible wireless device. Unfortunately your options are limited =(

Have a good Easter,
