Hello,
I have recently upgraded a domain from windows 2000 to Windows 2003 and
added to Windows 2003 domain controllers to it. I migrated DNS, DHCP, and
WINS to one of the new domain controllers.
WINS seemed to be functioning, but I was unable to actually use the WINS
console. It kept giving me the error “Cannot find the WINS Server.
It turned out that permissions were incorrectly set on
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\SecurePipeServers\Winreg
LocalService needed read access, and it was not listed. I could not add it
until I moved some FSMO role (I think it was PDC Emulator) to one of the 2003
servers, but after I did that and added the proper permissions, the WINS
console works fine.
My problem now is that every few minutes, the permissions for LocalService
disappear and the console stops working again.
My workaround is to constantly add them back in, but is there any known way
to get this to stop happening?
Thanks,
Joe Palladino
