cant open files on network

I've mentioned this before but I now have a bit more info.

This is a simple wired network - desktop and laptop.

Occasionally (quite often, really... but not always) the laptop will
not open a document which is on the desktop. The document is usually,
perhaps always, a WordPerfect document; but this doesn't apply to all
WordPerfect documents. The document is in a shared folder on the
desktop.

When attempting to open on the laptop, the error message In Use or Read
Only appears. If I click on Yes ("you may open but not edit. Do you
want to?) I then get Access Denied.

There is no common thread here. The documents' property sheets are
identical to other documents (eg they are not read-only documents).

Recreating the documents with new names often solves the problem.

This continues to happen even with some new documents.

Otherwise the network works fine; and that includes most WordPerfect
documents.

Please can somebody help?

Have you tried moving the folder off the desktop (just stick it in
root) and create a shortcut to it from the desktop.

Possibly something is doing something with the files because they are
on the desktop, might not be but worth a try.

I'm sorry, I don't know what this means

Yes. But by "desktop" I meant the desktop computer, as opposed to
"laptop", not the desktop of the computer. The files are in a folder in
the C drive of the main ("desktop") computer.

Are you using simple filesharing, with the same username/workgroup
on both the desktop PC and the laptop? If so, it might be worth
sharing the root of C:, again, on the desktop PC, while the laptop
is connected. The only other thing I can think of is that some
background process on the desktop PC is opening and locking the
files temporarily - maybe a badly behaved anti-virus scanner?
HTH,
