I am trying to directly connect my desktop (XP) with my
portable (98se). I have the hardware installed, a cross-
over cable connecting the two, and ran the network setup
on XP then created the setup disk for 98se. The wizard
ran fine. I am also using the default "MSHOME" workgroup.
At this moment, the computers just ping each other, but
do no more communicating than that. I can't see either
computer on the other. I don't know what to do... seeing
I have no background in this. So, if you can help, please
spell it out in easy terms. Thanks

Make sure you have "Print and File Sharing" service running.

File and Printer sharing as well as Client for Microsoft Networks on both
machines are needed. Make sure to login to both Win98 and XP machines with
same username and password.

These tips should help get everything working:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...c_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
