Hello

I can't figure this out.

On my XP Professional laptop, I cannot map a network drive or a network
place to folders on my server. I can ping the server, I can do Remote
Desktop Connection to server. I even have have a network place to
another folder on the server, which was created some time ago and
continues to work fine.

From my laptop I cannot browse or see the server/folders on Microsoft
Windows Network. My security and sharing options appear to be fine

Sppreciate any suggestions.

K

It sounds like you can still map a drive to the server if a mapped drive
already exists but you may be having a problem with the browse list. See if
you can ping the server by name and Ip address and in your run box enter
\\servername or \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of
the server. If both of those work you definitely have a problem with the
browse list [My Network Places]. If \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx works but \\servername
does not you have a name resolution problem. The quick list of things to
check is that you have netbios over tcp/ip enabled in tcp/ip
properties/advanced wins and that you see at least three entries when you
run the nbtstat -n command. You should be able to see at least your own
computer in My Network Places assuming you have file and print sharing
enabled and check that the server shows computer in My Network Places.
Another thing to try is to boot into safe mode with networking to see if
that helps as safe mode will bypass most startup applications that may be
interfering with the browse list maintenance by blocking port 138 UDP
traffic. Do not boot into safe mode with networking if you do not have
another firewall protecting you from the internet however. --- Steve
