last week, my aging d-link router sent a bad packet to my computer: needless
to say i had to reload from scratch to correct it. i named the computer the
exact same name it had before, used the same domain [windows server 2000--all
updates/service paks installed] name, double checked active dir. on the
server: computer name and user name is there--same as the computer, but it
will not let me join the doamin at all. all the drivers are updated, nothing
has an explamation mark or red circle, i can hit the internet [even tried
with windows firewall off] but still no domain.

does anyone have any suggestions on this.

Thank You,

Jeff Burton

Hi!

What is your error exactly? Maybe you should delete computer account from AD
and then try to rejoin your computer to domain?

only thing i get--is a dialog box after a reboot of the XP machine, that
states " can't join the domain". the only choice i have is to log on locally.

No--i haven't tried delecting user nor computer from A/D--is it possible
something got corrupted in A/D?

Hi!

Can you clarify few things? You have W2K AD and XP client? You reinstalled
the client from scratch without disjoining from domain first? XP client now
has the same name?

sorry for confusion: yes XP machine was wiped clean, reformatted, and
reinstalled from scratch and all updates & service pak applied. no-i did not
unjoin from the domain--couldn't as it was stuck in a continuus reboot
loop-even in safe mode. plus-i had the XP machine at home, and not at work,
on the network.
The server has not been touched or alter either-i made no changes within
A/D, only viewed it-to match name, sign on ID.

Hi!

Now you try to join to domain and you get an error? What is that error?

get a dialog box that states "can't join to the domain" with only a OK
button. get the regular logon screen-and can only log on to the local
computer.

Hi!

I would remove old computer account from AD and try to join computer to
domain again? Let me know what happens.

For a JoinDomain there are a number of things that should be right,
amongst other things the DNS settings on the client.
Be sure you can ping the domain by FQDN (ping mydomain.com) and the
domaincontroller has the netlogon and sysvol share available. These two
garantuee you that the DC is up and running, and your DNSserver and
clientsettings are OK.

Then for the joindomain; you can either choose the NetBIOS name to
join, but when this does not work you might give the FQDN
(mydomain.com) a shot. This might work when WINS is not in place and
the DC is on a different network. I presume you have an administrator
equivalent uid/psw for the domain to join the computer when the
popup-box shows to join the domain....

Typically the "password" of the "computeraccount" in the AD will be
reset when you try to join the domain with a computer which has the
same name as the object in AD. Deleting the computerobject in AD will
therefore probably not resolve your issue..
