I'm trying to install a Linksys LNE100TX EtherFast NIC in Windows 98SE.
I've downloaded the latest driver (v5) from the Linksys web site which
includes files for Windows 98, but Windows won't accept it. Does anyone
know which driver version is the correct one, or how to solve this problem?
I have more than one Linksys NIC so I know it's not a defective card issue.

Had the same problem. Two 98se machines, two Linksys NICs. One upgraded to v5
no problem. The other one took some effort. After Removing and reinstalling
failed to work I sort of crammed it down it's throat by copying the new files
to the proper directories and then changing file names of the old version
files. After a reboot it took the bait. Not elegant but I have the updates
installed. ;_)

I speculate that it is a flawed install routine much like the W95 version.
Linksys cards were a difficult install there too.

Thanks for the reply. The problem is I'm replacing a different NIC that
failed. The linksys was never installed in this system so I can't use the
same trick. Do you know if an older driver was more compatible?

For the record, I found an older driver on the linksys web site that windows
98se recognized.

FWIW, the .inf files refer to the following vendor and device IDs:

[Linksys]
PCI\VEN_1317&DEV_0985&SUBSYS_05741317

A vendor and device ID search at ...

http://www.pcidatabase.com/search.ph...dor_search.y=0

.... leads to an AN983B/BX chip made by http://www.admtek.com.tw/.

ADMtek appears to have been acquired by Infineon who provides version
220 and 217 drivers on its web site:

http://www.infineon.com/cgi-bin/ifx/...geTypeId=17099
