CAN'T INSTALL BELKIN NIC DRIVERS

I'm having trouble installing the drivers for a Belkin 54g wireless network
card in 98se. I've been onto Belkin who have given me several versions of
their drivers but it comes down to the same thing... "Error 1F6 Windows can't
install the driver for your device" (or similar words). Belkin say at this
point that it's a bug with Win 98 and not really their problem. Any ideas?
Thanks.

What versions did you try, and how was the installation performed [via
installer or INF]?
Did you clean-up after the failed installs, if not you may have an INF
error per the different software versions.

Tried to find info on Belkin but couldn't get to the site. I did find many
pages which claimed no issues with 98SE. Is that the OS version you are
using and is it fully updated?.

Sorry, minds a little distant today... these might help if answered.
What computer are we discussing, make and model.
Are there other adapters in the configuration [card or on-board]?

What is the exact model of your card? All Belkin wireless model numbers
start with F5D, followed by four more digits. Do you/did you have any other
network adapter cards installed? Do you currently have a telephone modem
installed? Are you going to keep it?

Hi MEB,

Thanks for your response. I'll try to answer all your questions.
The Belkin drivers I tried were versions 1, 2.4, 3.2, 6 & 7.
I tried installing them by their installers and directly from their INF
files (the latter wouldn't work at all!).
I cleaned up as best I could after each time by using the uninstaller,
device manager to remove the device deleting the inf folders under
Windows/inf/other and physically removing the card. I must admit to
forgetting to try MS cleanup utility.
It is Windows 98se and is as updated as it got prior to support being removed.

I'll add more on your second post...

To continue...

It's a PCChips M571 socket 7 mobo (yes I know it's ancient but it's served
me well for many years!), other PCI cards apart form the Belkin which
currently is in slot 1, is a NVidia GeForce MX400 in slot 2 and a Rockwell
56k modem (for FAX) in slot 3. There is just one ISA slot for a Soundblaster
card.

Hope this helps. Many thanks for your time.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for helping me out on this one. It's a F5D7000ec. Now I did raise
this issue of being an "ec" with Belkin because they always quote "uk" and I
wondered if this was significant being in the UK as I am, but apparently not.

As mentioned above to MEB, apart from the Belkin card, I do have a Rockwell
telephone modem which I use for faxing and an NVidia graphics card, which
completes my 3x PCI line-up.

Hope it helps. All the best,

Sandy

Let me put both together:

Good, then at least that's not part of the issue.

It does, gives a chance to check the specs out. Several versions of the
board [as well as several *manufacturers*]
On board video and sound, no on board network.
No need to explain about the age, I also have several dinosaurs here, in
fact I'm using a 440BX .board for this.
The information I find suggest there were more slots, hmm. Franc Zabkar did
some extensive technical work concerning the board. Off subject anyway.

As to the problem, it happens to be quite common with several net adapters
and SE:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/N100393.asp - was the technique you
used similar to this?
http://www.freelists.org/archives/pc.../msg00504.html
http://forum.pcmech.com/archive/index.php/t-34610.html
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

Some have found that by merely connecting the net card to a network [or
modem/router], caused the install to mysteriously work..Others found that
changing the card [same] would then allow installation [like a bad card, and
yes there a new defectives].

I would ask if you went into SAFE MODE and made sure that there were no
ghost entries from previous attempts?

Sometimes its found that going into Control Panel > NETWORK > and removing
all entries [and of course re-setting it up after a shut down] would then
allow the installation.

Wait and see what Gary comes up with though before you delete the Network
and start over.

(I've read your other stuff.) Well, I gotta admit that my favorite fix for
all things network is to wipe the devices (NICs, Modem, everything in
Network applet), also from the Device Manager, and start over. But you might
want to stick with MEB for a while before getting so drastic.

Of course, the other option is to try a different NIC.
