If you connect a PC to a hub, there'll be "in" and "out" traffic down
the pairs. Try connecting two PCs together and a "patch" cable would
connect them but the "out" traffic would be on the same pair, and you
would need a crossover. With most modern hubs / switches the kit can
sense the traffic and will adapt to match the cable, so whether there
is a crossover or straight-through (patch) cable, it would work. But
sometimes kit (older stuff) won't adapt. Linking a 24 port switch to
another 24 port switch might need a crossover (though some kit uses a
switch to reverse just one of the ports to allow uplinking). HTH.
