Can't get Internet download upgrades for AVG , Bazookia, etc.

I have a Gateway desktop connected with ethernet cable to
Mn-700 and DSL modem. All works fine. Ia have a Toshiba
Sattalite with an MN-720 card and all works - file
shareing, email, internet web pages, etc. When I try to
update AVG 6.0 or Bazooka I get:
"error updating the database, CInternetException*e:
Error connecting or downloading data from
http://...............
System error message: A connection with the server could
not be established
Could not update the database: Please chech the following:
1. Are you connected to the internet?
2. Maybe it was a temporary error. Please try later"

Of course I was connected and many tries later the error
did not seem temporary.

Check the documentation for any ports that the update
software needs to be open. Open those ports on the MN700
