Can't get broadband

Hi,

I have recently moved into a new house and thought I would be able to
get broadband easily since I don't live in the middle of nowhere, but
when I used the BT checker I got this message

Check availability - results
Your exchange has broadband.

However, despite an engineer's visit to your premises it has been
proved not possible for your telephone line to support broadband
service. Please accept our apologies. We are continuing to look for
alternative technology solutions and this site will be updated with
developments as they happen.

The phone line is currently disconnected but I don't want to have it
reconnected if I can't get broadband, does this affect the broadband
checker? I have tried calling BT but they just kept saying my exchange
wasn't enabled but as far as I can work out it is, what can I do to try
and get broadband?

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, it means the last check they did may well be out of date.

Is it a 'New' development where you now live, as in not that many years old?
It could be that you are provided service via TPON (fibre to the street
cabinet) which cannot support aDSL (yet).

Alternatively could be that the line was on a Pair gain Device (also known
as DACS) and the last time around it was deemed 'uneconomic' to upgrade the
cabling. Either way, talk to your preferred ISP and get them to check
further with their supplier.

Assuming you are on the 0121-434 exchange it is fully ADSL and includes a
number of LLU facilities.

http://www.dslzoneuk.net/checker.php for more details but you may not get a
result from mthe checker if the line is disconnected.

OK Looks like Bearwood exchange which is fully equipped, I don't imagine
TPON is in that area. My only concern would be DACs, which BT are
getting more and more likely to remove. A lot of LLU unbundling on that
exchange from Be, Bulldog & Sky which is a good sign.

My advice would be to go around you neighbours, and see if they are on
broadband or if not grab their telephone numbers to check on BT site.
(this will give a very good indication)

Alternatively go through one of the LLU operators such as Bulldog. As
you are buying a phone line and broadband in a package you should be
able to cancel if they cannot provision the broadband line.
