Can't get broadband anymore

Hi,

I had a Freeserve broadband connection on my line from last September
until last week. The connection was 100% reliable. Now I am trying to
sign-up with Plus.net and their (and bt.com) ADSL checker says that I
am too far from the exchange. Even Freeserve checker now says I am too
far. I am physically about 1 mile from my local exchange. So how can I
be too far?.

I tried calling a number of people within BT and they all say (after
running the same check) that I am too far. When I check on my main
number (and my neighbour's number), the ADSL check says I can get
ADSL. All lines are from the same exchange.

Any ideas?.

Thanks for any info/suggestions.

Lasitha

You might try asking for advice on the forums at www.adslguide.org.uk I
have seen similar requests for help result in some pretty knowledgeable
responses. From what little I know, you need to probably call an ISP who
will do a "manual order" and explain the situation to them.

Get PlusNet (or whatever ISP you want to go with) to submit a manual order
if a normal order fails.

I called Freeserve again and spoke to someone in their Cancellations Dept.
He said BT won't clear the line until Friday and I should try again after
Saturday.

It would have been helpful if BT's ADSL checker gave a more meaningful
error, rather than saying "too far from the exchange".

Also, I am quite disappointed PlusNet were unwilling to submit a manual
order.

I think I might re-join Freeserve on their £17.99 deal since this is a £8
saving over PlusNet (I know Freeserve customer service is not the best, but
....).

Where do you get the £8 saving from? Also remember Freeserve is capped with
a 2Gb limit!!

PlusNet is £25 pm (+£12 P&P for the modem = extra £1 pm), so total is
£26 per month. Freeserve is £18.

I don't do a lot of downloads. 2GB is more than enough.

Look again at the plusnet page.
14.99 for 1Gb/month 512K.
You don't need to pay for a modem.
I'm not sure if you'd qualify for the free transfer offer.

Now BT tells me that I can't get BB after all. When I signed-up for
Freeserve last September, my line length from the exchange was under 5.5 Km
and now it is over 6 Km (driving distance between my home and the exchange
is about 1.5 Km). They must have re-routed me in the last 6 months or so.

What are my options?. Can I ask/force them to reduce my distance?.

Thanks

Lasitha
