can't find DHCP on NetGear Wireless ADSL Router (DG834g)

argghhh !
ok....DG834g installed and the laptop (a thinkpad) will connect over
wireless no problem, and connect directly through ethernet no problem
but my desktop which is XP Pro with a Netgear FA310TX Fast Ethernet
refuses to connect.

when connected I get the relevant LAN lights with occasional flashing
(100M lights up at all points)....Win XP recognises when the LAN
connection is removed/reconnected. I've tried plugging it through my
original HUB (Netgear DS104) to the router also...same problem.
Desktop just assigns itself a private IP...TCP/IP is setup to take a
server assigned IP but it obviously isn't finding the DHCP server.
Can't even ping the router from the desktop.

any ideas what I cant try to diagnose the problem ?

Go to your Network icon and set the gateway to 192.168.1.1 (or whatever your
router IP is).

well...I did try that...along with setting a static IP to no
avail....then I had a catastrophic HDD failure..the western dig.
diagnostics were unable to fix during an extended test so I'm taking
the drive into a local place to hopefully recover some of my personal
docs etc. The network probs were probably a precursor to something
more serious...excellent ! Luckily the laptop is functioning.
