It can take up to 15 minutes for network browsing (My Network Places
and Network Neighborhood) to work after a computer starts up.
During that time, you should be able to access the other computer
directly by typing its name in the Start | Run box in this format:
\\computer
Using more than one protocol can make network browsing unreliable,
especially when XP is involved. If you don't have a specific need for
IPX/SPX (e.g. for networked games), remove it from both computers. If
you need IPX/SPX, choose one protocol for file sharing and un-bind
file sharing from the other one. I've written a web page with
details:
Windows XP Network Protocols
