can't even boot into safe mode in win98 (first edition)

I have a computer running windows 98 (not SE, the first edition). I
added a network card and configured the card to get an address via DHCP
so to take advantage of a broadband connection, all worked fine. Then I
moved the computer away from this network connection - so no net
connection all - and found I couldn't reboot, it gets as far as the
Windows 98 splash screen (with the animated shifting colour bar at the
bottom). I thought, well, maybe it's hanging on looking for a DHCP
server, so I tried to reboot in safe mode - exactly the same, it hangs
on the splash screen. I tried removing the network card and rebooting
again, neither normal or safe mode worked still, so I put the network
card back.

Can anyone suggest any next steps to get the thing to boot?
I can access the hard disk via a linux box so accessing the files is ok
- the hard disk appears to be fully intact and accessible - I'm just
stumped as to what to do next!

thanks,
alex

If a problem is less than 5 days old in win98 then restart the system
pressing the F8 key and choose Command prompt only Dos or restart in
Msdos mode and type scanreg/restore and try an older reg(cab
file)backup, however you may have to re-install some programs and user
changes if they were installed after this date.
You can type just scanreg and say,"Yes" if you want to make a fresh
registry back up.
You can then also type
scanreg/fix and then scanreg/opt to fix and compact the registry. You
can type win or exit from Msdos mode to get back to windows.
You can use the free WRP program off here to back up the registry as
well as it saves more files.

If registry restore does not work (as suggested in Shep's note) try
booting in SafeMode. Then go to Start, Settings, Control Panel,
System, Device Manager, Network Adapters. Select the item for the
network card and remove it. Then reboot without the network card in
place. That may clear the logjam.

thanks for the reply. As I said, however, I can't boot in safe mode - it
hangs at the splash screen!

Thanks for this, I was vaguely aware of registry restoring but didn't
know how to go about it... I'll try and let you know!

thanks

Btw, are these registry backups made automatically? I've not made any
manual reg backups...

When I boot into safe mode, I do not get a splach screen. Hold F8
while booting then select option3 in the DOS menu.

Yes the backups are made automatically - first time you boot each day.
There are last five days saved.

that's what I've been doing, and I do get a splash screen! I'm going to
try the registry restore today.
