I have been recommended to post here with my problem.

Win 98se well specced.
BT broadband with 205 router, all working well except for...

I can't e-mail out. I can browse the web, post to news groups but I keep
getting an error message when I try to post an e-mail. eg

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's
e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was '(E-Mail Removed)'.
Subject 'Re: Seasons Greetings + attachments', Account: 'davenpat', Server:
'mail.btopenworld.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530 authentication
required - for help go to
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/pop/pop-11.html', Port: 25, Secure(SSL):
No, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

also I get

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'davenpat', Server: 'mail.btopenworld.com', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Any one with an idea as to what is wrong? I am loath to phone BT Yahoo as I
have had lots of problems with my wife's connection and bothered them
somewhat to distraction with what turned out to be a computer problem

Dave

Why not use the btinternet/btopenworld internal newsgroups and ask
there ?

Your failure could be a firewall issue, especially for the second
error - the first error could be because BTYahoo are going to make
smtp authentication compulsory very shortly - have you ticked this
option on your OE settings ?

Ah, you've decided to post error messages now? This looks like
authentication issues. Try going into the account properties and
setting authentication on outgoing mail server.

Try sticking 0x800CCC0F into Google.

There's a clue in the error message?
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/pop/pop-11.html

It looks like your mail client (presume you are using OuthouseExcess
since you're using that for news) is not set up for authentication to
BT's SMTP and/or POP3 server

Did you go there? it tells you exactly how to setup authentication ...

I got an answer from uk.comp.misc and it turned out to be a missing tick in
the authentication box.

Many thanks to anyone who got their thinking caps on

I didn't know it existed, but I do now :-)
Thanks for that. The original problem was cured by ticking the
authentication box. E-mail is now flowing. :-)

Yes, as above and in another post. Are there any implications in the
authentication? I am fairly computer literate, but broadband and routers are
a new area for me now. It took me 3 days to get my wife's computer up and
running through a network card. Mind you, I did have the g children nagging
me at the same time, so hence the 3 days ;-)
that's my story and I'm sticking to it. ;-)

You might find it worth using the cross-post feature (simply add a comma,
and the second newsgroup name) rather than post the same question twice.

(However, don't go mad on cross-posting, it can get messy if one group has
someone thinking your post is off-topic and starts a very long argument!)

I call it outlook depressed, but I take your meaning ;-)

Now that raises another question that I am not going to ask right now.
When I click on the link, outlook depressed asks me for a password and then
tells me it is wrong. It's my account, my password, so who is M$not to tell
me I'm wrong?
Hey ho! another day, another problem. I'll take a look at this and see if I
can sort it out myself. As I have said, I am fairly computer literate (my
specialist subject is getting them up and running after a crash), but I like
a challenge or three :-)

Many thanks for you time

Dave

If the mail server is currently out of action you`ll often get this sort
of response. If you know the details are correct, forget about it for a
few hours and try again.
